Perlite is a lightweight, porous growing medium used to improve drainage and aeration in indoor plant mixes. Its irregular structure creates air spaces throughout the growing medium, helping oxygen reach plant roots while allowing excess water to drain more freely.
Perlite is particularly useful when blending growing media for plants that dislike dense, water-retentive conditions. It can be combined with potting mixes, fine coco coir, bark chips and other growing media to customise the balance between moisture retention, drainage and root aeration.
Quick highlights
-
- Lightweight and highly porous growing medium
- Improves drainage in indoor plant mixes
- Increases airflow around plant roots
- Helps reduce compaction
- Ideal for propagation and customised growing media
- Suitable for a wide range of indoor plants
How to use
Mix Perlite into your chosen growing medium to increase drainage and aeration. The amount required will depend on the plant and the other components within the mix.
For general indoor plant mixes, combine Perlite with moisture-retentive components such as potting mix or fine coco coir to create a lighter, better-aerated growing medium.
For propagation, Perlite can be blended with other propagation media to provide moisture while maintaining valuable air spaces around developing roots.
Perlite is very lightweight and can produce fine dust when dry. Lightly dampen it before handling or mixing to minimise airborne particles.
Avoid compressing the finished growing medium tightly into the container, as maintaining air spaces around the root system is an important part of creating a healthy root environment.

Product highlights
The porous structure of Perlite helps improve both drainage and oxygen availability within a growing medium.
It is particularly useful for balancing finer, moisture-retentive components such as coco coir and conventional potting mixes.
Perlite does not significantly contribute nutrients to the growing medium, allowing it to improve physical structure without altering your normal plant feeding programme.
Its versatility makes it a useful staple for repotting, propagation and creating customised growing media for different indoor plant requirements.
