Moisture-retentive sphagnum moss ideal for propagation, moss poles, orchids, air layering and encouraging healthy root development.

Availability: 20 in stock

Sphagnum Moss is a lightweight, moisture-retentive growing medium widely used for propagation, aroid support, orchid care and specialist indoor plant growing. Its ability to hold moisture while maintaining airflow makes Sphagnum Moss particularly useful where consistent moisture is required without using a dense growing medium.

When hydrated, the long fibres absorb and retain water while still creating air spaces around roots and stems. This makes sphagnum especially useful for encouraging aerial roots, rooting cuttings and maintaining moisture around climbing aroids.

Quick highlights

    • Excellent moisture-retention properties
    • Lightweight and naturally fibrous
    • Maintains airflow while holding moisture
    • Ideal for propagation and rooting cuttings
    • Excellent for filling moss poles
    • Suitable for orchids and other epiphytic plants

How to use

Before use, soak the sphagnum moss in clean water until thoroughly hydrated. Gently squeeze out excess water so that the moss is evenly damp rather than saturated.

For propagation, loosely wrap damp moss around nodes or roots and maintain consistent moisture while new roots develop.

For moss poles, lightly pack hydrated sphagnum into the pole without compressing it excessively. Keep the moss slightly moist to encourage aerial roots from climbing aroids to grow into the pole.

When using with orchids or other epiphytic plants, avoid packing the moss tightly around the roots, as good airflow remains essential.

Suitable uses

    • Propagation of indoor plant cuttings
    • Filling moss poles and plant supports
    • Encouraging aerial root development
    • Orchid growing and repotting
    • Air layering

Product highlights

Sphagnum moss can hold a significant amount of moisture while its fibrous structure allows air to remain around developing roots.
It is particularly useful for propagating aroids such as Philodendron, Monstera, Anthurium and Rhaphidophora.
Its versatility makes it a useful addition to both everyday indoor plant care and more specialised propagation and growing methods
